Crisp County-Cordele Airport CKF
The Crisp County–Cordele Airport (ICAO: KCKF, FAA LID: CKF) is a county-owned, public-use airport located two nautical miles (4 km) northeast of the central business district of Cordele, a city in Crisp County, Georgia, United States. It is categorized it as a general aviation facility. The airport does not have scheduled commercial airline service.
The Crisp County–Cordele Airport covers an area of 619 acres at an elevation of 310 feet (94 m) above mean sea level. It has two asphalt-paved runways: 10/28 is 5,001 by 150 feet (1,524 x 46 m) and 5/23 is 5,006 by 100 feet (1,526 x 30 m). It also has four IFR approaches.
History of Crisp County – Cordele Airport
Opened to the public in March 1943, the airport was requisitioned by the United States Army Air Force during World War II and was known as Cordele Army Airfield. It was also known as Turner AAF Auxiliary Airfield No. 7. The airfield supported the AAF Advanced Pilot School (Twin-Engine) at Turner Army Airfield.
It was closed in mid-1944 with the drawdown of AAFTC's pilot training program. Declared surplus, it was turned over to the Army Corps of Engineers on September 30, 1945, and eventually discharged to the War Assets Administration (WAA) to become a civil airport.
Fly Cordele – Glider Contest
The Crisp County–Cordele Airport is proud to host the Sports Class Nationals and Region 5 South Soaring Contests in Cordele, Georgia. This premier glider-racing event brings experienced pilots and soaring enthusiasts from across the region and beyond to compete in several days of high-performance sailplane racing.
Cordele has a long-standing history of competitive soaring, having hosted glider contests for more than five decades. The area's relatively flat terrain, agricultural landscape, and favorable soaring conditions provide an ideal setting for pilots to test their skill, strategy, and ability to read the weather.
The Region 5 South Contest features FAI 15-Meter/Standard and 18-Meter classes, while the Sports Class Nationals brings national-level competition to Cordele. Pilots launch from Crisp County–Cordele Airport and fly assigned tasks over the surrounding South Georgia countryside, using rising air currents and thermals to cover long distances and achieve the fastest possible speeds.
